New cyber laws to safeguard UK economy and secure long-term growth

The UK government has today detailed its plans for the forthcoming Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, designed to significantly enhance the nation's defences against escalating online threats. This legislation aims to safeguard the economy and secure long-term growth by strengthening the security of critical national services, including hospitals and energy suppliers, as well as their vital IT service providers and supply chains. Officials emphasised that bolstering cyber resilience is a central component of the government's "Plan for Change," intended to build greater public, business, and investor confidence in the UK's digital infrastructure and services amidst growing threats that cost the economy billions annually.

Expected to be introduced later this year, the Bill will bring approximately 1,000 key IT service providers within its scope, mandating more robust cyber security measures. These requirements will encompass improved risk assessments, enhanced data protection, and stronger network security protocols for organisations supplying essential services. Regulators will gain expanded powers, including the ability to enforce mandatory reporting of cyber incidents to better understand the threat landscape. Furthermore, the government is considering extending protections to crucial data centres and granting the Technology Secretary powers to direct organisations to urgently implement security upgrades when necessary.

The legislation is presented as a vital step to counter the significant disruption caused by cyber incidents, highlighted by recent attacks like the one on NHS pathology provider Synnovis, which cost an estimated £32.7 million and caused widespread patient disruption. 1  With the National Cyber Security Centre managing numerous significant incidents weekly and half of UK businesses reporting breaches, the Bill aims to create a more secure digital environment. It includes provisions allowing the regulatory framework to be updated swiftly, ensuring the UK can adapt its defences to keep pace with evolving technological threats and maintain national security effectively.
